The Power of Small: Why Supporting Local Businesses Grows Us All

As the holiday season approaches, many of us start making lists, checking them twice, and deciding where to spend our hard-earned dollars. This year, the Nordonia Hills Chamber of Commerce invites you to make one simple choice that creates a lasting impact: shop small.

On Saturday, November 29, the national Small Business Saturday® campaign officially kicks off and this year, the Nordonia Hills Chamber is proud to serve once again as an official Neighborhood Champion through the American Express Shop Small® Collaborative.

But Small Business Saturday isn’t just one day. It’s the start of a season-long movement a chance for residents, families, and fellow entrepreneurs to come together in support of the businesses that make Nordonia Hills thrive.

What Is the Shop Small® Collaborative?

The Shop Small Collaborative, powered by American Express, is designed to raise awareness of the vital role small businesses play in their communities. As a Neighborhood Champion, the Nordonia Hills Chamber helps lead that effort locally providing promotional materials, community outreach, and opportunities for small businesses to gain visibility throughout the entire holiday season.

Through this initiative, participating businesses receive Shop Small kits, which include official signage, marketing collateral, and digital tools to help them attract customers and showcase their involvement. The Chamber helps distribute these materials and coordinates joint promotions to spotlight the businesses that keep our neighborhoods strong.

This collaborative effort isn’t about competition it’s about connection. Together, we can show that when small businesses grow, the whole community grows.

The Ripple Effect of Shopping Small

When you spend money at a local business, it doesn’t just stop there. Your purchase creates a ripple effect that touches nearly every corner of the community:

  • More local jobs: Small businesses create nearly two-thirds of new jobs

across the U.S. every year.

  • Stronger local economy: For every $100 spent at a small business, an average of $68 stays in the community, supporting schools, parks, and local services.
  • Sustainable impact: Shopping local reduces shipping, packaging waste, and environmental strain making it a more eco-friendly choice.
  • Community investment: Small businesses donate 250% more to local nonprofits and causes than large corporations do.

In 2023, American Express reported that Small Business Saturday generated

$17.9 billion in consumer spending across the U.S. Those are powerful numbers — and when we each make small, intentional choices, those numbers become even more meaningful right here at home.

Local Roots. Lasting Impact.

Every business that opens its doors in Nordonia Hills adds something special whether it’s the family-run café that knows your order by heart, the boutique that carries handmade gifts, or the service provider who sponsors your child’s baseball team.

These are the businesses that define our community’s character. They’re also the ones who show up supporting fundraisers, mentoring students, and giving back in ways that can’t be measured by profit alone.

When residents choose to shop local, they strengthen the same network that supports them in return. That’s the power of small: every purchase becomes a partnership.

How the Chamber Helps Local Businesses Thrive

The Nordonia Hills Chamber of Commerce exists to support and advocate for our business community connecting local owners, providing resources, and helping them reach new audiences.

During the Shop Small Collaborative, we go a step further. The Chamber acts as a central hub for marketing, outreach, and event coordination, ensuring that participating businesses are seen, supported, and celebrated throughout the season.

We also offer year-end membership specials, making this the perfect time for small business owners to join the Chamber network. Members gain access to collaborative promotions, networking events, and visibility opportunities that extend well beyond the holidays.

If you’re a local business owner, reach out to learn how Chamber membership can help you grow. Together, we can amplify your presence and make sure the community knows your name.
