I want to begin by recognizing several members of our Nordonia Hills community whose work reflects the strength of our schools.
Recently, three staff members received countywide recognition. Carrie Mitchner, a teacher at Lee Eaton Intermediate School, was named Summit County Teacher of the Year. Ethan Nario-Redmond, a teacher at Rushwood Elementary School, was named Summit County Rookie of the Year. Dr. Jacqui O’Mara, principal of Rushwood Elementary, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. These honors speak to the quality of teaching and leadership taking place across our district every day.
Dr. O’Mara’s recognition comes as she prepares to retire after 28 years with Nordonia Hills City Schools, including 17 years as principal of Rushwood Elementary. Under her leadership, Rushwood has remained a place where students are known, families feel connected, and staff work together with purpose. Her impact on the school and the district is lasting, and we are grateful for her years of service.
As we honor Dr. O’Mara’s legacy, we also look ahead. Mrs. Ashley Turner will step into the role of principal at Rushwood Elementary. Mrs. Turner currently serves as associate principal at Nordonia Middle School and brings experience, familiarity with our district, and strong relationships with staff and students. She will provide continuity while continuing to move Rushwood forward.
Across the district, our buildings continue to do meaningful work.
At Rushwood Elementary, students remain engaged in literacy and foundational skill development, with recent participation and recognition in regional reading initiatives. Staff continue to focus on meeting individual student needs while maintaining a strong sense of belonging for families.
Northfield Elementary students and staff have remained focused despite a challenging winter schedule. Fourth graders recently completed required personal safety programming, and teachers continue to balance academic progress with attention to student well-being. Family involvement remains a strength of the Northfield community.
At Ledgeview Elementary, winter benchmark data shows strong academic growth, particularly in early literacy. Staff are using assessment data to guide instruction and provide timely support. The building also continues to promote a positive school culture through assemblies and activities that keep students connected and motivated.
Lee Eaton Intermediate School has remained centered on collaboration and student support. Teams continue to engage in MTSS meetings that focus on data, targeted interventions, and problem-solving. Despite a shortened schedule, staff maintained strong routines and a productive learning environment, reinforcing consistency for students.
At Nordonia Middle School, staff supported students through scheduling transitions and worked closely with families to ensure a smooth start to the second semester. The school also continues to benefit from strong community partnerships, including efforts to improve athletic facilities that support student activities and programs.
Nordonia High School has had an active and productive start to the semester. The school hosted a curriculum showcase for families, rolled out scheduling for the coming year, and provided College Credit Plus information sessions that help students plan for postsecondary options. Seniors are entering an important stretch of the year, and staff continue to support them as they prepare for graduation.
Even during a winter marked by weather disruptions, our students and staff have shown resilience, focus, and pride in their work. That consistency across all buildings is something our entire community can be proud of.
