Progress Through Partnership: New Contracts and Summer Improvements Move Nordonia Forward

Jul 3, 2025 | Chamber News

As we move through July, I want to thank the entire Nordonia community for your continued support of our schools. While students and staff enjoy a well-earned summer break, we’ve been hard at work finalizing plans and preparing for the year ahead. A key part of that work has been aligning our day-to-day operations with the goals outlined in our strategic plan, Stronger Together: Building Stability, Optimizing Resources, and Achieving Success.

One of the most important developments this summer was the approval of new three-year contracts with both our teachers and support staff. These agreements include a 2% annual raise—consistent with many surrounding districts—but what stands out most is the updated healthcare structure.

Beginning this year, if healthcare premiums rise more than 5% in a given year, the increase will be shared equally between employees and the district through a 50/50 cost-sharing model. This structure is based on the agreement used by the Sagamore Hills Police Department, and we’re grateful for their leadership. This approach brings predictability and balance to one of the district’s most significant operating costs, helping us better manage future budgets while continuing to offer competitive benefits.

Alongside these contracts, we are reviewing staffing levels across the district. Through a voluntary separation program and a careful evaluation of paraprofessional assignments, we are working to match staffing with actual student needs. These adjustments are being made thoughtfully and are helping us control costs without compromising the level of support we provide to students.

We are also making progress on several building improvements. Roof replacements are underway at Nordonia High School, Nordonia Middle School, and Rushwood Elementary. These projects are on schedule and reflect our commitment to maintaining safe and efficient facilities. At Northfield Elementary, we’re installing a new high-efficiency boiler in the B hallway, which will improve heating reliability and energy efficiency.

Safety upgrades are also in motion. A new BDA radio system is being installed at Rushwood to improve communication for first responders during emergencies. Additionally, we’re replacing aging fiber lines between the high school and the maintenance building—at no cost to the general fund—thanks to targeted grant funding.

Thank you again for your trust and support. These updates reflect a shared commitment to stability, accountability, and progress. I hope the rest of your summer is safe, relaxing, and enjoyable.
