As we start the year, I’m excited to reflect on the many accomplishments across the Nordonia Hills City Schools district. From academic achievements to community involvement, a lot is happening that deserves attention. In this post, I’ll highlight some of the most impactful moments from our schools, showing how education can positively shape our communities.
Nordonia High School: Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders
At Nordonia High School, we see an increase in student participation in extracurricular activities that enrich their learning experiences and shape their future leadership skills. Our Mock Trial team has earned significant recognition this year, securing 2nd place in the Summit County competition and advancing to the next round in February. This is just one example of how our students prepare for successful futures, honing critical thinking and public speaking skills to benefit them in any career.
In addition to academic and extracurricular success, our school spirit is thriving. With Spirit Week on the horizon, events like the Lip Sync contest bring students together to celebrate creativity and unity. These traditions are important in fostering a positive school culture, where students can feel connected to each other, their school, and their community.
Perhaps most notably, our students have embraced service projects that honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through volunteering and organizing community initiatives, they are learning the importance of giving back and creating change in the world around them.
Nordonia Middle School: Creating a Supportive Learning Environment
At Nordonia Middle School, we are always looking for ways to enhance our educational experience and ensure that every student receives the support they need to succeed. This year, we are hosting a 7th Grade Parent Orientation on February 4, offering an opportunity for parents to get a closer look at what middle school life is all about. This event allows families to ask questions, connect with teachers, and understand how we are working together to help their students excel.
We are also focused on providing a well-rounded education. As part of our effort to improve scheduling and maximize instructional time, we’re looking at ways to streamline classes while maintaining high academic standards. It’s about making the most of every moment with our students so they can grow both academically and personally.
Lee Eaton Intermediate School: Leadership and Growth
At Lee Eaton Intermediate School, our focus is on helping students develop the skills they need to thrive in both school and life. We are proud of our student leadership group, the Knights of the Round Table, who are actively working to improve school culture. These students are taking the lead on projects that foster respect for their peers, promote a positive school environment, and encourage a love of learning. The work they’re doing shows that leadership doesn’t have to come from adults alone—our students are learning to lead by example.
In addition, we continue to offer engaging programs like academic boosters and intramurals, which provide students with opportunities to develop both their academic and social skills. These activities are designed to help students learn teamwork, communication, and leadership, all while having fun and making lasting memories.
Rushwood Elementary: Creating Memorable Experiences
Rushwood Elementary School has been busy fostering a sense of community and connection. One of the highlights this year was our students participating in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ cheer tunnel, a unique experience that allowed them to be part of a live sports event. It’s moments like these that help students see the value of being part of something bigger than themselves. The event not only boosted school spirit but also gave students the opportunity to create memories that they will carry with them for years to come.
In addition, our Kindergarten teachers have been working diligently to conduct Dyslexia screenings for every student. These screenings are essential in ensuring that we identify and provide early interventions for any student who may need additional support. Early detection is key to helping all students succeed, and we are committed to providing the resources necessary to help each child achieve their full potential.
Ledgeview Elementary: Giving Back to the Community
Ledgeview Elementary is taking action with its Penny Wars competition, a fun and engaging way to raise funds for the Sub Zero Mission, which helps homeless veterans. This project not only raises money but also teaches our students about the importance of service and giving back to the community. It’s been heartening to see the excitement and enthusiasm from students as they work together toward a common goal: supporting our veterans.
As part of this initiative, students and staff have been learning about homelessness, particularly the issue of veterans experiencing homelessness. This is a topic that often goes overlooked, and we are proud of our students for taking an active interest in helping to make a difference. This initiative has also sparked conversations in classrooms about leadership, compassion, and community service, making it a valuable learning experience for all involved.
Community Involvement: Strengthening Our School District
What truly sets Nordonia Hills City Schools apart is the way our students and staff engage with the community. From volunteering at local events to fundraising for important causes like homelessness, our students are constantly involved in making their community a better place. These service projects and community initiatives teach students the importance of empathy, responsibility, and kindness.
Whether it’s helping raise money for veterans or taking part in school-wide events, the spirit of giving and collaboration is alive and well in our district. These experiences help students develop a sense of civic responsibility and reinforce the value of giving back to the community that supports them.
